An Immigration Double-Standard
This week Mexican President Felipe Calderon has been visiting Washington, DC and widely criticizing the new Arizona law intended to address the influx of illegal immigration.
Yet, President Calderon and many others have failed to recognize that the new Arizona law is actually weaker than Mexico’s own immigration laws. Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. Immigrants who are deported and attempt to re-enter can be imprisoned for 10 years. Visa violators can be sentenced to six-year terms. Mexicans who help illegal immigrants are considered criminals. Read more here.
Immigration is a sovereign issue. Citizenship in our nation is a privilege, not a right and our leaders ought to insist that Americans - not other nations - determine policies to control our borders and enforce our laws.
